What is hard water?
It's water with a high content of minerals like calcium and magnesium. Hard Water.

Why is hard water a negative?
The minerals in hard water interact with soaps and detergents, reducing their lathering and cleaning power. Further, these minerals build up on a wide variety of surfaces and damage plumbing, fixtures, and machinery.

How does water softening work?
The water softener replaces the harmful minerals in your water with sodium, which does not hamper the work of soaps and detergents or build up on surfaces. Water Softening.

Won't that make my water "salty"?
No. To the human body, the sodium content is completely negligible. Softened water does not taste salty, either.

So what are the benefits of water softening?
In the bathroom, your soap will lather and clean you much better. You will see little or no white mineral buildup on your sinks, showers, and bathtubs. You will also use much less detergent when washing clothes, and your clothes will last longer. When you wash your dishes, you will get few or no spots caused by mineral content in the water. Finally, you will prevent long-term wear on pipes, plumbing fixtures, and machines like water heaters, washing machines, and dishwashers.

What is reverse osmosis?
It's a process in which water is pushed through a membrane at high pressure to produce extremely pure water. The vast majority of bottled purified water sold in the United States is produced through this process. This water is excellent for drinking, cooking, and similar uses. Reverse Osmosis.

Is the water made from a reverse osmosis system at home as good as bottled water?
Yes. Industrial-grade reverse osmosis equipment can (but does not always) produce water that has a few grains per gallon less impurities than home-produced reverse osmosis water, but they are essentially the same.

And because it isn't stored in a plastic bottle or jug, reverse osmosis water produced at home has no plastic taste. Bottled Water.

What are the benefits of a home reverse osmosis system?
You will always have pure, delicious water on tap for drinking and cooking. The system is usually hooked up to your refrigerator's ice maker, too, so your ice will cool your drinks without adding unwanted flavors.
